Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo on a small private lake in Cornwall, England, after setting up a hide with a pole extending from it. I fed the fish in the lake to attract them to just below the pole. That's why the Kingfisher is looking downwards. The Kingfisher used to come twice a day to feed early in the season whilst feeding its young. Later in the year it taught its young to catch fish from the same branch. I have a series of photos, one showing the Kingfisher with a fish in its mouth.

Time

This was taken around midday. I always heard the Kingfisher before I saw it, it had a distinctive shrill cry, and you could hear it diving into the water. It was very quick, so speed was always high to get a clear picture.

Lighting

It was a bright sunny day.

Equipment

I used a Canon EOS 7D with a standard EF 40-70 mm zoom.1:4 L USM, No tripod, just resting on a shelf in the hide.

Inspiration

I was inspired to set up a project to take this phot because I had seen flashes of beautiful colour, but could not get close enough to take a photo.

Editing

No processing

In my camera bag

A couple of lenses, usually a 600mm zoom, a 100mm macro and straight 50mm zoom all with anti-glare filters, spare batteries and a drink of water.

Feedback

Be patient and re-create a natural environment which will make the subject feel comfortable.,
