Behind The Lens

Location

This image was taken on the summit of Hawks Bill Mountain in Western North Carolina just off the Blue Ridge Parkway while attending a Fall Color photography workshop.

Time

Most of our group woke very early and hiked up in the dark to catch sunrise. The wind was howling at the top but and it was quite cold but the views in every direction were stunning and we were treated to a beautiful sunrise.

Lighting

Lighting here is all mother sun! Light playing off the clouds and fall foliage allowed for a variety of compositions.

Equipment

Canon 5d Mark III and EF 16-35mm f/2.8L IS II

Inspiration

The views from atop Hawks Bill are awe inspiring in every direction, especially with the light and fall foliage. For this particular shot, I tried to capture the magnificence of the Linville Gorge, aka. "The Grand Canyon of the Appalachian Mountains", below.

Editing

Post work on this image includes a typical pass through LR5 making minor adjustments before a run through PS and NIK.

Feedback

Know your equipment and don't be afraid to try different techniques. Explore a variety of compositions at a location rather than settling on just one.I did not know about this place until this visit but doing your homework on a location you plan to visit and knowing what time sunrise will be and getting yourself in place leaving plenty of time to capture it is a must. While this shot was taken a bit after sunrise it takes advantage of magic hour light and excellent Fall color in an incredibly scenic place.
