Behind The Lens

Location

This photo is from the Dark MoFo festival in Hobart, Tasmania in 2014 - it is the "Articulated Intersect" installation of artist Rafael Lozano-Hemmer. Dark MoFo is a real drawcard for photographers each year - there is always something amazing to picture! http://www.lozano-hemmer.com/articulated_intersect.php https://darkmofo.net.au/

Time

Early evening - there was a queue of photographers on the wharf waiting for the lights to be turned on.

Lighting

Not for this picture!

Equipment

I just have the basic Canon Eos 1100D - and a tripod! I'm saving up for a better camera.

Inspiration

Midwinter in Hobart is pretty cold, dark and boring - the Dark MoFo Festival brings EVERYONE out to see the sights. It's great to have something to do after work other than go home to the boring TV.

Editing

Just a bit of crop/straighten and noise reduction.

In my camera bag

Besides my camera and a couple of standard lenses - heat packs for either my fingers or the lens if it's frosty, oh and a spare remote shutter release cable (manual) for when the wireless one goes on the blink (which it invariably does just when I least need it to!)

Feedback

For this particular shot, because the lights were moving all the time, it was a case of take lots of shots to find the ones I liked with the lights lined up nicely. For a crowded event - get there early and stake out your spot! Some people have a really bad habit of just ignoring the fact that you have a tripod set up, pointed in a particular direction - and just stand themselves in front of you, so be prepared to point out the flaming obvious (nicely of course). :)
