It was at sunrise. A hurricane was passing by out to sea.Lighting
Shooting into the sun at sunrise gave me the silhouette effect I wanted.Equipment
It was taken 8 years ago with a Canon Powershot S3. Sorry, I'm a minimalist... not tripod, no SLR lens, no flash, etc.Inspiration
I always go out at sunrise when I'm in Ocean City, to watch the sun rise over the ocean. It presents countless opportunities. With the hurricane passing by out to sea, I knew waves would make it even better. I love the story silhouette's can tell.Editing
I crop and adjust the light, but that's basically it. I take a lot of pictures... rather than spend a long time working pictures, I tell myself go out and get a better one.In my camera bag
I have no bag. I shoot mainly birds and wildlife. I'm usually in a canoe, kayak, hiking, climbing a mountain, etc. I want to travel light and I have no time for changing lenses. I'm often photographing tiny warblers that weigh less than half an ounce. With a small light camera (Canon SX50 now) I can carry my camera with extra battery & memory card in a fanny pack. I wear the fanny pack forward, so I have easy access to the camera. I'm a rare breed.. a marsupial photographer.Feedback
I always shoot in manual. But you can actually get this effect by shooting into bright light in auto, because it tricks the camera into shutting down the light. If anyone wants to be included on my "birdlist", all they have to do is ask. It's free. I send out pictures of birds and wildlife about 2 times per month.
