Behind The Lens

Location

Bar Island, Bar Harbor, Maine

Time

Morning.

Lighting

Sunny day, but around 7 am, in June.

Equipment

Just a Canon Power Shot S2. No special lenses, filters or equipment.

Inspiration

My wife and I kayaked to Bar Island. While exploring the island we came across a beautiful field of lupines. As we were walking back to our kayaks we saw this deer. She bolted into the woods in the direction of the lupine field. I told my wife I had to go back, hoping for a shot of the deer in the flowers. My hope and anticipation were rewarded.

Editing

I use free and easy Picasa. I prefer not to do much processing, though I almost always crop and often tweak the light a bit.

In my camera bag

I use a fanny pack that holds only my camera, an extra battery and extra memory card. My cameras are ultra zoom, currently the Canon SX40 (soon to move up to the SX50 or SX60). My targets are wildlife, including bears, deer, caribou, coyotes, etc, but my main focus is on birds. I need to be light and fast... no heavy equipment, no other lenses and definitely no tripods. I climb mountains, kayak, hike through the back country, forests, mountains, swamps and deserts. No place for expensive equipment, no time to change lenses.

Feedback

My style definitely goes against the mainstream of buying the most expensive equipment possible. For the most part all cameras are so good today, compared to even 10 years ago, that to me anyway, understanding composition, knowing what the camera sees (hint: often it doesn't see what you see), understanding lighting, knowing how to use your particular camera, are more important than what camera you're using. I should also add, in my case, knowing were to find the wildlife and birds, knowing their habits and being fit enough to get there, are critical.
