Behind The Lens

Location

The photo is taken in my home in Belgium. As I don't have a studio I just took the photo in my living room using whatever I had at hand.

Time

Somewhere in the afternoon, close to Christmas. After baking the delicious brownies I couldn't resist taking a photo of them.

Lighting

I used the BALLED pro one the right side of the frame with a soft bounce on the left side. In the background, out of frame, is also the Christmas Tree. I like the BALLED pro as it a small source of light and easily placed where needed. I purchased it after a Food Photography course by Joris Luyten.

Equipment

Nikon D40, Nikkor 50mm f/1.8G. and as mentioned earlier the BALLED and a bouncer. Sometimes I use a tripod but I think on this occasion I shot handheld.

Inspiration

I love to shoot food, most of all something home cooked/baked. The inspiration for this particular photo came from the darkness outside and warmth inside. I love the Christmas season as it brings people and family back together. I can't think of a better way than to share some home cooked brownies.

Editing

I adjusted some minor things and used a vignette layer.

In my camera bag

All of my equipment fits in my Think Tank bag. I only have three lenses, my Nikon body and a speedlight. Nikon D40 50mm f/1.8G 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6G 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G kit lens Of course a macro lens is on my wish list!

Feedback

A lot of books are written on how to take the perfect food picture. I'll share the setup I use most often: Light source on the right side of the frame (more to the back). Light bouncer on the front-left side of the frame. This way you can even out the hard shadows, although sometimes they add more drama to the photo. One tip that I find useful. Be prepared; setup everything before the food is ready. Know how you want to take the picture because if you want to eat the food you'll need to be quick. And of course, try multiple shooting angles!
