Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken indoors at the gym.

Time

This was my first light painting image. I first learned about light painting from Even of Photo Extremist. In his light painting eBook he described what equipment to use and settings used to create various types of light painting. The tools he described ranged from simple fairy lights (or Christmas lights) to using steel wool. Even also described the settings used for the respective techniques. This photo was taken at 6 a.m. indoors.

Lighting

Prior to creating this image, I set up my tripod and camera then the strongman equipment (described in my light description) with my fairy lights. I then turned off the lights in the gym and used a flashlight to navigate my way through the gym. After my set up was complete only the large Christmas lights that I had attached to a Yolk, which is best described as specialty equipment used in a strongman event that competitors use to walk a given distance (An image of the Yolk that was used can be viewed in the Light Painting album).

Equipment

The camera that I used was a Canon EOS Rebel XTi with a 50mm lens mounted on a tripod. Non-photography equipment used was the strongman equipment listed in the lighting section. The settings: Shutter Speed: 10 seconds, F-Stop F16, ISO 100.

Inspiration

At the time this photo was taken I had just learned how to create light paintings so I was interested in seeing what I can do with fairy lights and I thought a gym setting would be a great place and see how creative I can get.

Editing

No processing was done with the photo. This image was straight out of the camera.

In my camera bag

I currently have the following equipment. Camera: Canon EOS Rebel XTi Lenses: Canon 18-55mm kit lens, Canon 50m 1.8 II prime, and a Canon 100mm 2.8 Macro lens. Tripod: Dolica 60" Carbon Fiber Tripod and recently I added a YoungNuo YN500EX Speedlight to my gear

Feedback

For those interested in Light painting, be as creative as possible. Find books and/or lessons on light painting and play with the settings. As far as equipment, you can do some really great things with simple gear such Christmas lights or flashlight and play with the camera settings. There have been some amazing light paintings done with hula-hoops, steel wool. Cool effects such as light trails have been created by passing cars. There was an article on how to create light trails that mentioned that you can use one car(the caveat was to make sure you are in a clear area). This article described that with you and another person set up your tripod and camera on a hill in a neighborhood with curved roads. For your camera, your setting would be set at the longest setting and have your friend drive down the road. The point that I would like to make is, be creative and have fun.
