Location
This was taken right in my friends apartment on his tiny kitchen. One black backdrop, a table, a couple of lights and very little space to move, but in the end it all came together.Time
This was taken in the late afternoon. Luckily I wasn’t to worried about losing light since I had all my lighting equipment with me. Neither of us are morning people and on top shopping for food for the shoot and setup time we knew were going to be working into the night. Thankfully I was prepared to keep everything up to par.Lighting
There wasn’t much thought into this particular shot. I knew I wanted them to be simple, but you can tell there’s a story behind it. I kept one light slightly off/above to him to give somewhat of an interrogation look.Equipment
This was shot with my Nikon d5100 and sigma 18-300mm lens, hot shoe flash, and one mount dog light setupInspiration
My friend has been a chef for over 20 years and has acquired a large chef knife collection. I knew I wanted to line them and mix up the sizes to give some abstracted look even though we weren’t sure where we were going with the poses. I told him to do what feels right for the feel of the photo and he started doing a lot of “thinker” like poses. We had many great shots with the knives, but this one stuck out in particular. One of his biggest inspirations is Anthony Bourdain, and in a way he wanted to capture his essence, and I think we did just that.Editing
There’s wasn’t much post processing afterwards. I wanted a lot of the photo to speak for itself. I mostly adjusted the midpoint light, black, white and contrast to achieve the look I was going for.In my camera bag
I always have my Nikon d5100, my nikkor 35mm and 50mm lenses. Those have always been my go to lenses for almost all my projects. Other equipment will depend on what is going on that day such as my flash, other lenses, even mics for video projects. I try to keep all my lighting and backdrop equipment together with my main camera bag so I’m organized for my day.Feedback
Whether you’ve known someone for 5 years or 5 days, take some time to make those personal connections. When you find out what they love and what they truly want to capture, it not only makes your job easier, but what you capture becomes something so much more. Adding those little details and interests for your subject not only means you’re listening, but it all becomes more than a picture you took. There’s a story there.
