Behind The Lens

Location

My client lived in this beautiful condo community with the exact look I was dreaming of for this shoot. It had everything to dark hardwood floors to a gorgeous fountain outside. This particular feature was right on her balcony overlooking the neighborhood in Little Compton, Rhode Island.

Time

Even though we kept the photo black and white, the highlights from that golden hour sun still sneak through her hair. This was taken on November 25th, 2015 at around 5:30pm

Lighting

This was my clients favorite photos for many reasons. We both had a love for that golden hour sunset. It other photos of this set, the color highlighted her hair and skin just as a pictured an old Hollywood movie. At the time my equipment was limited, so I had no access to lighting equipment and completely relied on what the sun could do for me

Equipment

I used my Nikon D5100 with my 55-200mm lens for this portrait. Since I was just beginning photography at this time, I didn’t have much equipment to go by.

Inspiration

As long as I could remember, I’ve always had a love for classic movies thanks to my mom. I instantly fell in love with the Katherine Hepburn, Marilyn Monroe look. Once I got my hands on a camera it was one of my first thoughts to do photos like this. Thankfully my gorgeous client, who was my first thought for the look too, was completely overjoyed and on board with the idea. There’s just something about curling your hair, throwing on some red lipstick and a black dress that makes you feel so elegant and put together.

Editing

Since this was one of my first shoots ever, I didn’t not do any post processing for this photo

In my camera bag

I never leave the house without my Nikon 5100, my 50-200mm and 35mm. Both lenses have captured great portraits for me over the time, which has been my main focus for the last two years. I also carry my tripod with me when I want complete vibration reduction, and one of my main portrait lights with one of my main reflector attachments

Feedback

Always make sure the look you’re going for completely satisfies you. Never tell yourself it’s “good enough”. This is how you challenge yourself. Whether you have limited resources such as equipment, or you could be having an artists block. Keep your vision alive in your head. That’s how we grow, learn, and at the end of the day be happy with ourselves. Everything will change constantly so matter how much you plan out your day between the weather, outfits, poses etc. But when you choose mind over matter, that’s where the best shots come out.
