Behind The Lens

Location

It was a hot day in Steamboat Springs CO. My friend Ande and I decided to make our way down to the Bear River Skatepark to experiment with the new fish eye lens I had just gotten in the mail.

Time

It was just past noon, and lighting was rather hard to work with. Fortunately the little whisky clouds offered some protection from all the mid day glares. I decided to get in real close and drop it low for the angle.

Lighting

I’ve always had a love affair with black and white photography. The way it feels to study the picture. The elements that come to light in the shadows. I feel like a pioneer discovering new sceneries when I go back to look at them.

Equipment

This shot was taken with a Sony A7-III and a Rokinon 2.8 / 12mm fisheye lens. I didn’t use a tripod or a flash. Being so close under the rider I needed to be ready for a quick evacuation in case of any mishaps.

Inspiration

I had recently gotten my Rokinon 12mm fisheye and really wanted to figure out some prime angles. I remember from a few thrasher cover shots they would use a really low angle to Make the objects look bigger. It really worked well on this one.

Editing

I did not

In my camera bag

I currently only have the one body. But I am planning on getting another one so I won’t have to deal with switching lenses out all the time. I primarily use the 12mm fisheye and a 70-200 long lens.

Feedback

A lot of this is just trial and error. I would say the most important thing to do is to think outside the box and try shooting in ways you normally wouldn’t, but don’t think too hard on it and remember to have fun!
