Behind The Lens

Location

This shot was taken in the bedroom shared by my daughters. The Cat is called Harley. He is very photogenic and seems to enjoy having his picture taken.

Time

It was late morning when this was taken. The window faces east so the light is strongest in morning.

Lighting

The only light in this shot is natural light through the window. Around midday the sun moves around the side of the house. This was late morning so I was able to capture the back light from the window which also light the cats face giving a nice dual aspect to the light with only one light source.

Equipment

The camera is a Nikon D3100. The Lens was a standard Nikkor 18 - 55mm. The camera was handheld and no flash or extra lighting was used.

Inspiration

Harley likes to sleep in the girls room, especially on the window sill. However, about a week before I took this photo we had adopted a dog. The first meeting between cat and dog was pretty traumatic for both and Harley spent 99% of the next two weeks in the girls bedroom. This spot on the window sill was his home for two weeks. It did however provide me lots of good photo opportunities. I took a number of shots some with eyes open and some with eyes closed (his not mine), I also switched the focal point from his face to his paw. My personal favourite was with eyes closed and paw in sharp focus but the version you see here seem to be the most popular with everyone else.

Editing

I use Darktable for post processing. My usual routine is to check for any badly over or under exposed areas and adjust accordingly and then I flatten the image with lens and perspective compensation. I will often use a 3d LUT to colourise my photos and create a 'look and feel' but as far as I remember I left this one natural.

In my camera bag

My camera is borrowed from my Dad. I have the Nikon D3100 a Nikkor 18-55mm lens and a Nikkor 55-200mm lens. No external flash, no filters just the camera, lenses, a tripod and my eyes.

Feedback

What I like most about having only basic equipment is that it makes you focus on the basic principles of good composition and lighting. Play with the focal point and the f-stop. When only using natural light move yourself rather than the subject and take multiple images. Just feel free to experiment and see what you can capture.
