Behind The Lens
Location
It was taken at O'Reilly's Rainforest Retreat in the Lamington National Park near Canungra, south east Queensland. The beautiful gardens were planted along the front of one of the buildings.Time
The photo was taken on 11th August, 2013. After wandering around and taking some photos of the amazing bird life, I came across some tulips in the garden. It was around 5:00pm on a perfectly clear day and the sun was shining across the garden on an angle that just lit up this tulip.Lighting
The tulip seemed to be almost glowing in the sunlight so to take advantage of the angle of the light, I laid down on the grass and took the photo. The sun was at an almost 45 degree angle to the flower so I was able to take the photo front on so that the layers of the petals could be clearly seen.Equipment
The camera I used is a Canon EOS 1000D. Hand held with settings f/7 and 1/320 sec which was fast enough to elimate movement and still keep the details.Inspiration
I was attracted by the simple beauty of a white flower with the light playing on the petals.Editing
I adjusted the contrast slightly but I didn't do any other post-processing.In my camera bag
The camera that I took this photograph with, the Canon 1000D with a 18-55mm lens and a 55-250mm lens has been passed on to a family member. I now have a Canon 70D with an 18-135mm lens and a Macro lens. I always have UV filters fitted on my lenses and I also have a 10-stop neutral density filter for daytime long exposures. Other important items in my bags are a cable release, a lens cloth, a small torch, a pen & notebook and a light plastic poncho in case of inclement weather. I can pull the camera up into the sleeve of the poncho if it starts raining. I have a tripod that stays in my car for whenever I need one.Feedback
Late afternoon is a magical time to get highlighted photos like this one. You just have to look around and take notice of where the sun is shining. The sun shining behind flowers will always highlight the petals beautifully but look out for sunlight through the trees or shining on the side of a statue. The shadows are what give the photograph its character. As long as your camera is angled across the line of the sunlight, you won't damage your eyes or your camera.
