This photo was taken at the local show. There was a travelling animal display with snakes, a small crocodile, a number of lizards and this marsupial mouse. He was in a large glass enclosure and the movement of the people didn't seem to bother him at all.Time
It was mid-afternoon and there were a lot of people around.Lighting
The sun was overhead and the display was under a shelter so the lighting was quite even under the shade and I didn't have to worry about the sun. I did have to move around a little to avoid reflections on the glass.Equipment
I used my Canon EOS70D, hand held. I didn't use a flash because I wanted to avoid reflections on the glass.Inspiration
This little mouse was just too cute to pass by. And it is something you don't see every day.Editing
I did tweak the contrast and saturation a little because taking the photo through the glass dulled the image a bit.In my camera bag
I have a Canon 70D with an 18-135mm lens. Most of the time, my camera bag is in my car as you never know where you will end up or what you will see. I always have UV filters fitted on my lenses and I also have a 10-stop neutral density filter for daytime long exposures. Other important items in my bags are a cable release, a lens cloth, a small torch, a pen & notebook and a light plastic poncho in case of inclement weather. I can pull the camera up into the sleeve of the poncho if it starts raining. I have a tripod that stays in my car for whenever I need one.Feedback
I don't get to travel around much but I love attending animal shows and zoos. Just because you can't leave the state or the country, doesn't mean you have to miss out photographing exotic or unusual animals. Most zoos have open viewing now so you can get some amazing shots with a zoom lens. In this case, the animal was behind glass, so you might need to move around a bit and turn off the auto flash to avoid reflections, and use a fast shutter speed. If I am in a hurry or there are a lot of people around, I tend to rely on my pre-set 'Action' setting otherwise I will experiment with Manual setting but I take photos through glass all the time now. It just takes practice and knowing your camera well. Don't be afraid to experiment.
