Knights Templar were exempt from seigniorial taxes in exchange for their protection towards the local population. The power of the headquarters, or commandery, extended over seven cantons.
After the dissolution of the Knights Templar, the commandery and all its property passed to the order of Saint John of Jerusalem, which kept it until the French Revolution.
