Behind The Lens

Location

This image was taken in the Otway National Park, located in Victoria, Australia.

Time

My day started around 4am this particular day, after a 2 1/2 hour drive avoiding the temptation of stopping every few kilometres to take photos of the lovely mist on the surrounding hills, I finally arrived at the National park. It was particularly cold this day with every little cloud cover from the night before resulting in the morning mist. After hiking 30 minutes through the dark with nothing but a head light I finally arrived at the waterfall, just need to find a composition now..

Lighting

By arriving early in the morning I was able to get the nice soft light to create a smooth and calming atmosphere that I personally find very satisfying and pleasing in many landscape photos , no harsh shadows , just nice calm and relaxing.

Equipment

This image was taken on the entry level Canon 750D with a 24-70mm lens mounted on a tripod.

Inspiration

After seeing a video about using exposure lock, then adjusting iso to achieve different shutter speeds and textures, I decided to give this try. So I put my camera in aperture priority mode, get the right exposure levels, take the first image, lock the exposure, increase my iso to get a faster shutter speed take another image for texture.

Editing

yes , I would align all the images then using layer masks paint in the different speeds/textures of water in different locations of the images, for example the smooth water at the top of the image a result of shutter speed of 1.5 seconds, to the textured flow of the water around the rocks in the lower third, from a speed of .5 seconds. By using this technique I was able to pick all my favourite components of the different shutter speeds and combine them to create an interesting image/

In my camera bag

Unfortunately I'm not blessed with a huge bank account, so I have to make make do, basically everything I own from the 24-70mm lens to the camera bag itself is second hand. It consists of a Canon 5d mk 3 , a Canon 24-70mm , a Tamron 70-200 along with my Vanguard tripod.

Feedback

Enjoy it, find a nice water fall or stream, put your camera on a tripod and start experimenting. I found this a great learning experience just seeing first hand the different effects the shutter speed can have on the water, how it reacts to its location wether falling from the the tops to crashing against the rocks below.
