Location
This photo was taken from a hilltop in the forest in the Lanaudiere region, about an hour north of Montreal, Quebec.Time
The image was photographed towards the end of the afternoon.Lighting
The overcast sky contributed by diffusing the light thus reducing the overall contrast and thereby providing more shadow detail as well as reduced highlights. It produces the same effect as a studio softbox... definitely my favourite kind of outdoor lighting.Equipment
I used a small handheld Nikon D7200 with a 300mm lens. When I hike through the woods, I like to keep my gear light and simple. I previsualize my image and generally know which scene I want to photograph. This approach makes life a lot easier.Inspiration
The attraction to the autumn colours of Eastern North Americas' forests' are simply majestic and require no additional explanation. I might add that they change rapidly and timing is everything. Many moons ago I happened upon a series of images in the French magazine "Photo". They were amazing shots of forests that inspired me deeply. I realized, from the compacted image depth, they were all taken with a long lens. I had to try this for myself.Editing
Having succeeded in obtaining a "good shot", I enhanced my image with Photoshop filters. First thing being Selective Colour, then High Pass filter in a new layer using the soft light option, then applied a slight touch of Posterize in a new layer, generally set to +/- 50%. Afterwards, I used the Filterforge Grunge plugin adjusted to my liking. In my camera bag
Years of dragging heavy gear to shoots have taught me to travel light. I carry as little as possible but keep a spare body and a couple of other focal lengths handy just in case. Planning your shot ahead makes the selection a lot easier.Feedback
We all have our unique approach to cultivate. All I can recommend is planning ahead. What are you intent on photographing and how do you want your image to be... Use a long lens to compress the depth, travel light, and wear comfortable shoes. Also, a good insect repellant can make the difference, for that I prefer Watkins repellant. Enjoy!
