Location
This image was taken just outside Smith Rock State Park in Oregon late spring or early summer.Time
The time of day was right after sunset and into the blue hour. With the storm it was difficult to really know where the sun was but an image taken right before this had some subtle red coloring in the sky suggesting the sun had just set moments before.Lighting
Lighting in this picture was entirely determined by the layers of clouds forming. Without a storm with really high elevation and low hanging misty clouds there'd be no image here. Honestly got lucky I had my camera on a tripod and was out taking pictures, the movement and light in the images wasn't really visible to the naked eye.Equipment
I used a Fuji X100s mounted in a Manfrotto tripod. Because Fuji's need a threaded cable release, I just used the 2 second timer to settle any vibration before the picture was taken.Inspiration
I think it is crazy to believe that every great photo comes from some inspiration. This photo for example came from me literally pointing the camera at my tent and hoping for the best. In a way I wanted to document my trip and capture the unsettling feeling of going to bed with a storm brewing, but couldn't have imagined this image would come from that moment. (Otherwise I would have probably shot it on my 7D MarkII)Editing
The only post processing was simple white and black point adjustments and a quick custom tone curve in Lightroom. I of course added some local adjustments just to get everything to balance out, but nothing special. In my camera bag
On the average trip like this I will have my Canon 7D MarkII with the Sigma 18-35mm F1.8 and a 70-200mm F2.8 USM L. Beyond that I will carry my Fuji x100s and a film camera (either my Nikon FM or Mamiya C3). What really lets me get around is my Lowepro Whistler camera bag that lets me fill up on camera gear, carry ropes and lunch!Feedback
Just have a camera on you a take pictures. Not every picture can be planned or pre-visualized sometimes you just have to get out and experiment. If you want to get the motion in the clouds like this you'd also need to get yourself a tripod so you can open up the shutter for linger than 1/2 second.
