This photo was taken on a grey day at home. The kids were just milling about, playing and I was keen to document it along the way. I think it's so lovely getting photo memories of ordinary everyday life. Those are the photos I will look back on with fondness and nostalgia. Real life.Time
This was shot in the afternoon, I believe. It was unplanned and organic. Just the usual annoying mum who follows her kids around and takes photos of everything, more or less.Lighting
This is all-natural light. There was a window to his right which gives a lovely diffused light on him. I always like to have a window to the side of my model if possible. It was an overcast day which also acts like nature's own softbox and gives you a nice even skin tone.Equipment
I used my Canon EOS 5D Mark III and my Sigma 35mm lens and natural light from a window. I never use a tripod as I need to be able to move around at all times. The 35mm lens is super awesome to use inside and gives you a really cool look to your images.Inspiration
I'm not sure what inspired me to do this photo specifically. I guess my kids inspire me a lot and this was his favourite stuffed toy at the time so I wanted to remember that moment. The almost sad look in his eyes is all him, he's a great little actor in the making.Editing
Yes, I did quite a bit of post-processing to this. I had just bought some really cool rain overlays from Jessica Drossin, a favorite photographer of mine, and wanted to try them out. This photo has a bit of a sad feel to it anyway, with the look in his eyes and the blue background so I thought it went well together. I love playing around in photoshop and trying all sorts of things to make the photo tell a story. I think it works well in this one.In my camera bag
I always have my Canon EOS 5D Mark III, my Canon 50mm 1.2, my Sigma 35mm, and my much beloved Canon 70-200mm lens. I also bring my flash but never really use it! I use a Lowepro backpack as I prefer carrying it all on my back rather than a fancy handbag.Feedback
Carry your camera around with you at all times and just shoot your family life. Try and get details to tell a story and don't tell the kids to do this and that and smile and definitely DON'T teach them to say cheese! Just let them do whatever they're doing and play along or just observe them. Oftentimes, they will love the attention they're getting from you and you can get some really lovely photos at the same time. Shoot many photos, play around with your settings and try and be creative. Don't worry about mess or silliness, just be there, in the moment, and enjoy it.
