“To infinity and beyond!”

One of my favorite quotes to add to such a crazy capture. And although during the time of this capture, Chicago missed the blood moon, I still had to make a composite to what it could have looked like.

Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo from the 360 Chicago here at the John Hancock Tower in Chicago.

Time

This was past sunset at probably around 8-9 pm. I'm not too entirely sure, but it was taken around the blood moon period during the time.

Lighting

Honestly, the clouds were already red & the night sky in the city was surprisingly clear. So because we missed the blood moon within the city, due to a snowstorm, I decided to invest that color into the scene & create a composite image above Sears Tower. And to add to said composite, I decided to copy/paste some stars that surprisingly came out within the photo.

Equipment

I used a Canon 5D Mark IV, a Tamron 24-70 2.8 & my Manfrotto tripod.

Inspiration

There was honestly a huge group of photographers attempting to get a nice shot of the blood moon. & although we missed it, what inspired me was just the chance at seeing a rare moon that we don't see too often.

Editing

There was a lot of post-processing for this photo. Since the city is usually bright at night, I had to down the exposure a little bit & add a light dodge mask to the sky; in order to bring it out more. Next, I had to drop in more cold tones, as night photos usually bring out warmer tones depending on the white balance. After that, I took to photoshop in order to desaturate the natural reds, add/blend in the moon & the stars. And finally, messing around with the tones a bit more to perfect the scene.

In my camera bag

My normal equipment is always my 5D Mark IV, my Tamron 24-70 2.8 along with my Canon 17-40 4.0 lens. Besides those, I have a tendency to bring my 70-300 for those long shots & my Manfrotto tripod.

Feedback

For a blood moon event within a well-known spot, I highly recommend coming early & scouting the perfect spot for your shot. After that, I recommend a slow shutter speed that fits your need & underexposing the shot, so you can truly bring out the colors & play around with the scene more.
