Location
This photo was taken at Jones Beach State Park on Long Island, NYTime
I always shoot for the early morning hours, from sunrise to several hours afterward. It is the best time of day to find the Snowy. Unlike most Owls, the Snowy Owl hunts for food during those hours and sleeps mostly at night.Lighting
That golden hour of the day really is golden whether morning or evening. Its also best because the sun is lower in the sky so you don't have that harsh light when its higher up.Equipment
Canon Rebel T6i, Handheld ISO 800 1/4000 sec f/5.6 300mm take with Canon 70-300mm lensInspiration
The Snowy Owl (my favorite bird) returns to Long Island each year from late November to early April. I spend many hours walking the south shore beaches in search of these beautiful birds!Editing
Yes, in this particular instance I used both Photoshop Elements 15 for initial processing. Then for something fun I used Picasa, it used to come standard with Microsoft Windows years ago, they have a fun feature called Comic Book which gives this cool effect! In my camera bag
I carry my Rebel with the Canon lenses 18-55mm and 70-300 along with my Canon PowerShot SX70 HS. I like to take the bridge camera along because I cannot hold the weight of a 600mm lens. The PowerShot goes a long way to capture those subjects that need more than the 300mm.Feedback
Patience is a virture for sure, and good walking shoes are a must! I have, at times, walked as many as 6 or 7 miles in search of my subject. Sometimes finding surprises along the way such as Peregrines, great Ducks and Shore birds.
