Location
This photo was taken at Papago Park located in Tempe, AZ.Time
This was taken during golden hour right as the sun was setting at the horizon. This is how I got the perfect golden glow.Lighting
For lighting in this photo I already knew that I wanted to get a silhouettes of the palm trees as well as the reflections in the water so I knew this would happen best when my lighting was minimal (sun close to the horizon).Equipment
This was shot with my Canon 70D and my Sigma Art 35mm 1.4 lens.Inspiration
I LOVE silhouette photos and with Arizona's stunning sunsets they definitely go hand in hand. I absolutely loved how the palm trees reflected in the lake water and how there was an entire row of them. I think it just embodies the west coast perfectly.Editing
I did not do a ton of post-processing on this image. I did bring down my highlights a tad, darkened my shadows and also brought up the saturation just a teeny bit on the yellows, oranges and blues. In my camera bag
Currently my must haves are my Canon 70D, Sigma Art 35mm 1.4, Canon 50mm 1.8, a lens cloth and also my Manfroto tripod that I will occasionally take out to do self-portraits or something that requires a slower shutter speed. I also keep a handy little remote shutter button with me as well.Feedback
Silhouettes are SO much fun to shoot. My biggest tip is to expose for the sky. When you expose for the sky, you will get those beautiful shadows. If I am capturing landscape silhouettes I try to include surroundings that are clear in shape to where you can tell what the object is. If I am shooting silhouettes of people or animals, getting down low and having your subject higher than you is key. This allows you to capture your subject against the sky solely without any distractions of other objects, building or general items.
