Behind The Lens

Location

I actually took this photo on my bedroom floor. There was a large window right above, that he was facing.

Time

This shot was done mid-afternoon. The window I used for light actually doesn’t face the sun at all. So it was bright enough outside that I got creamy light, but not the harshness of the sun.

Lighting

My original though for this was to create dappled light with the blanket that he’s under. This photo was actually an outtake that ended up being my favorite. I had him placed in front of the main light source (the window) so that the light would fall directly onto him.

Equipment

I used my Canon 70D and Canon 50mm 1.8 for this shot.

Inspiration

I wanted to capture a special portrait of my son with my grandmothers blanket.

Editing

I did minimal post-processing for this image. I smoothed his skin, sharpened the eyes and brightened them a smidge. I then converted to black and white in Lightroom with my own preset.

In my camera bag

I have my Canon 70D, Canon R, Sigma Art 35mm, RF 24-70mm, my Canon 50mm 1.8 and my tripod. I also keep small trinkets like a copper pipe and a prism for shooting creatively.

Feedback

Utilize natural light! Also, when shooting for black and white images, I like to make sure there is lots of contrast with the shadows and highlights. It makes things really pop when you convert to black and white.
