Behind The Lens

Location

My wife and I were staying at the Bryce Canyon Lodge, so we would be close to the main part of the canyon. We simply walked from there over to Sunset Point.

Time

We got up around 6:00, before sunrise. It was October and pretty cold, in the 30's. I have gloves but they are thin so I can work the camera and my hands still get cold.

Lighting

We had been in Zion NP the previous 3 days, and never saw a cloud. I was expecting to find an empty sky again. It was so wonderful to walk up the rise to the canyon edge and see a nicely lit, colorful sunrise sky.

Equipment

I carry two cameras: A Canon 6D with a Canon 16-35mm f4 lens, and a Nikon D7200 with a Nikon 18-200mm lens. That way I never have to take the time to change lenses, or to have the cameras open to dirt in the field. I also use an OSN tripod with a Manfrotto 3 axis gear head. This was a Canon shot.

Inspiration

I love the American west and the amazing variety of beautiful, natural features that you find there. The scenery is world class and it gives you such a warm feeling just to see such landscapes. Sunrise at Bryce Canyon is one of my favorite experiences and images.

Editing

The main processing here is that I shot separate exposures for the sky and the foreground. The editor HDR was not able to combine the two in a way that looked like what I remember seeing, so I did a manual blending of the sky from one shot and the canyon from the other.

In my camera bag

On top of my two camera system, which also gives me a backup if something goes wrong (there is another story there), I carry a variety of filters: circular polarizer, ND in 3, 6, and 10 stops that can be stacked, and a 3 stop ND grad. Beyond that is some lens cleaning kit and spare batteries.

Feedback

Give yourself plenty of time in an area to get the best image. You should allow time to scout an area broadly before deciding where you are going to shoot from, and also try to be around for several days at least so you can pick up better weather and lighting. Keep your mind open to new compositions.
