This image was taken at Indlovu River Lodge near Hoedspruit in South Africa from one of the underground hides available to photographers.Time
This was early in the morning, shortly after 7am .In Africa there’s never a battle for light. In the soft morning light everything looks dreamlike and perfect.Lighting
Soft morning light and afternoon golden light are your friends in the photography game. I got it pretty much right in camera that morning. The scene was set perfectly in (what we call) the Bush TVEquipment
I used my Nikon D500 and Nikkor 300mm PF f4 prime lens with a 1.4 converter. The Hide is fitted with Gimbles and just before the Bushbuck ambled shyly from the Bush, I mounted my camera on one.Inspiration
The whole scene was inspiring. Bushbuck are notoriously shy animals and to have one innocently drinking just a mere 10m away from you, is nothing short of inspiring.Editing
I shoot RAW, and use Lightroom for my processing. The light was spot-on , the exposure thus pretty much perfect. Pushed it through ‘auto’, did some sharpening on the eyes and cropped and that is pretty much it. Because I submit to Nature Competitions, I usually only do the most basic of processing ( to allow for the strict rules they have in the Nature division)In my camera bag
Nikon D500 and D600 ( hanging out for a D850). 300mm Prime Lens, 105mm Nikkor Macro Lens, 70-200mm and 16-35 wide angle.Feedback
#1. Visit South Africa. #2 Book the underground eye-level Hide at Indlovu River Lodge. #3 Get up early and be prepared to sit quietly in the Hide for hours. You’ll get amazing shots like this and more...the Bush gives with an open hand...be patient, and be prepared...it’ll come to you.
