Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at the summit of Cadillac Mountain in Acadia National Park in Bar Harbor, Maine.

Time

My friend and I got up a 3:00 am to make the trek to the mountain for a 4:30 am sunrise. I wanted to be there early enough to get a perfect spot for my shot and get set up. There were quite a few other photographers there that morning as well, but I was right where I wanted to be.

Lighting

As the sun came up in the horizon, the cloud cover picked up as well. It wasn't a spectacular sunrise so almost all of the people left, including all of the photographers. I asked my friend if she minded staying a bit as I could see that the sun would peak through the clouds shortly and would give me the wonderful star effect, if the clouds cooperated. She didn't mind all. As you can see my patience paid off.

Equipment

Canon 5d Mark II, tripod, 14 mm wide angle lens and remote.

Inspiration

I absolutely love sunrises and when I take a photo vacation, I get up at the crack of dawn to capture them. It is so awe inspiring to me to see the possibilities in the start of the new day.

Editing

Yes, I used Lightroom to brighten up the foreground a bit as it was in shadow and removed a sun flare from that area as well since it didn't add anything to the shot.

In my camera bag

That depends on what I plan to shoot as I do both landscape and nature shots. Typically I have both my Canon 5d and 70d bodies as well as a 100 mm macro if I am doing still photography, my 14 mm wide angle and 50 mm for landscape and my trusty 28-105mm for everything in between. Always have my remote and tripod with me as well.

Feedback

Plan ahead for the weather, I study it the night before, as you just never know what will come your way and be patient enough to wait for the shot.
