Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken on my small farm near Howlong, NSW in Australia. There are numerous photo opportunities on a farm and you are only limited by your own imagination and enthusiasm. Being an amateur photographer I was pleased with the end result.

Time

A cold and foggy morning was what called me out to see if I could get any dew shots. I was looking for cobwebs but found this in the process. I had to get extremely low to get the shot and therefore I was rather wet by the time I had finished but it was worth the effort.

Lighting

As it was foggy with the sun just starting to peep through, the lighting was perfect in that it help emphasise the dew drops. Had the sun been fully through the fog it may well have been too bright.

Equipment

I used a Canon 5D IV and the Canon EF 100mm 2.8L IS USM lens (my favourite). It was hand held while lying on the ground.

Inspiration

I love taking macro photos and in particular water drops and dew drops. Whenever conditions are right I take the opportunity to improve on my last shot, which doesn’t always happen, but it is fun trying.

Editing

There was minor post processing in Lightroom to adjust highlight, clarity and exposure.

In my camera bag

In my bag I always have my Canon 5D IV and sometime also have my Canon 70D. My 100mm lens goes with me everywhere and my Canon 24-105 L IS USM is usually in the bag. For landscapes I take my Canon 16-35mm as well as my tripod.

Feedback

To get great dew shots you have to be willing to get out of bed on cold damp mornings. I recommend a good macro lens for this type of shot as the lighting can be extreme either way so a good prime lens will help deal with that. I also recommend wearing some wet weather gear if you think you may end up lying on the ground like I did!
