Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken on my property in southern NSW, Australia when I was first starting out in photography. The tree that is featured in the foreground was dying and is no longer there which makes this shot quite unique for me as I will never be able to repeat it. Now that my skills have improved I would have loved to have tried this shot again.

Time

This was taken at sunset on a very clear autumn evening.

Lighting

The lighting as the sun went behind the tree was perfect for achieving this shot without getting any overexposure.

Equipment

A Canon 70D with a EF50 1.4 USM lens was used. I always use a tripod for sunsets due to limited lighting.

Inspiration

I love taking sunsets and where I live in Australia we get beautiful sunsets most nights. The tree and windmill were what drew me to this shot with the sun setting in the background. I have also managed to capture a car in the background driving on a dirt road and kicking up dust which I believe adds to this shot.

Editing

My post processing skills when I took this shot were very limited. I adjusted the highlights, contrast and clarity and Lightroom.

In my camera bag

In my bag I now have two Canon cameras, the 70D and 5D Mark IV. I also have a variety of lenses from wide angle 16-35mm, my 50mm f1.4, a 100mm f2.8 maco lens (my favourite) and a 24-105mm, these all being Canon lenses. In addition I have a 18-250 zoom lens for the 70D and a Tamron 28-300 for the 5D.

Feedback

When taking sunsets I believe a tripod is an absolute necessity. Since taking this shot I have learnt more about exposure compensation and believe this can aid in achieving great sunset shots without overexposing the sun. Patience is also required as the scene is constantly changing as the sun goes down and a variety of shots can be achieved in one session.
