Behind The Lens

Location

This shot was taken early morning at Pura Ulun Danu Bratan Temple, the temple complex is located on the shores of Lake Bratan in the mountains near Bedugul in the North of Bali, Indonesia.

Time

I made an effort to arrive at the temple before opening hours. Around 6:45am I managed to get in before anyone else had arrived which gave me the perfect oppertunity to experiment with angles before any tourist arrived.

Lighting

The moment was perfect, the sun hadn't long come up so it gave me some great natural light to work with, no external flash or other lighting was needed.

Equipment

For this shot I used my Canon EOS 550d, Sigma 10-20mm f3.5 EX DC HSM Lens. For the tripod I had to improvise a little, for this shot I balanced numerous objects including my wallet to prop up the lens on a nearby wall next to the water.

Inspiration

I had seen similar shots of the temple online whilst looking for interesting places to visit in Bali, but I felt confident I could do better. Generally I always try to take inspiration from other photographers, I always push myself to try to better shots I think are amazing captures. I think the time and dedication i put in to capturing this image really paid off, I tried several angles including kneeling down in the shallows and spent a good hour playing with different exposures to get my desired outcome.

Editing

For this shot I did all of my editing using Adobe Lightroom, generally I try not to over-do the post editing and try to keep the end result as natural as possible. For this shot in particular I sharpened the temple and used the opposing clarity tool to make the water appear just that much smoother. I made minor adjustments to the sky using a graduated filter and amplified the natural light coming from the sun. I also raised the vibrance and saturation in certain areas and played a little with the temperature tones.

In my camera bag

I often try to pack light when possible so I'm not one of those guys that carries a rucksack full of camera body's and lenses. At the moment I'm shooting with my Canon 550D until I can afford an upgrade, although it's ISO capabilities always let me down it's a robust fella and it's done me well over the years. When It comes to my lenses I always pack my Sigma 10-20mm f3.5, it's probably my most used lens I always pack with me for capturing landscapes or using in my Ikelite housing for underwater photography. I also always pack my underwater video lights, they give me such a wide angle light they often come in handy for painting in light whilst taking long exposure shots at night... they've also come in handy a good few times when I've lost track of time and got myself stuck in a muddy field in the dark.

Feedback

Planning ahead and being aware of what you're heading out to shoot is always a plus. Whenever I head to a location I always have a quick browse online to see what's been done before, this gives me target to aim towards. Another big one I've learned over the years especially whilst I was out backpacking around Southeast Asia is local knowledge. Locals often know things about their surrounding areas that just can't be found online. More than anything it allows you to interact as a guest rather than a visitor when your exploring but it can also benefit you in other ways. It can give you a knowledge of uncommon viewpoints and nearby places of interest, it can open your mind to a different perspective, and can also open opportunities to make connections with people and progress in marketing yourself as a photographer. All of which can give you an advantage over your general touristic travel photographer.
