Behind The Lens

Location

This was shot from a temple atop a hill/mountain in Mandalay, Mianmar/Burma.

Time

The scene pretty well describes the time of day.

Lighting

The images in the foreground were totally black. I wanted wanted to have the sharp foreground image and the actual sunset image in one exposure. I simply used the flash fill at a minimal level and set the main exposure for the desired "sunset.

Equipment

Nikon "CoolPix 7100" w/built in/pop up flash (I use this light weight point & shoot because at my age & stage the weight of higher grade cameras is not very compatible with group travel.) I believe I steadied the camera on a hand railing. (Nikko 7.1 optical zoom, 6.0-42.6 MM)

Inspiration

It was just a "nice sunset" but a special scene from the hilltop with a foreground that "made the image unique."

Editing

Nothing special. You pretty much have to make it in the camera.

In my camera bag

This is about it. I'm a retired teacher and always taught my students: "It's not what you have, but what you do with what you have, that counts."

Feedback

I use this technique regularly to shoot interior shots while also featuring the daylight scenery visible through windows. This makes the picture appear that we actually experience as our eyes and brain automatically adjust to a luminescent range beyond the cameras. Expose for the exterior and illuminate the interior with a soft light/
