The photo was taken two doors away from my home where Mrs. Levine has her wonderful front yard garden in Bayonne, NJTime
I remember going out of the house at around 10:30 a.m. and I came back at 11:30 a.m. I took shots of the monarchs at both times so I do not remember well it was the first morning shot or the second.Lighting
The butterflies were nicely lit by the natural sunlight and I even asked my neighbor(who is in her 80's) to come out and see what was happening in her front yard. She was amazed by the number of butterflies her garden had attracted and I was thankful that she planted such wonderful bushes.Equipment
I used my Nikon D-800 to take the butterflies and I mostly do all my photos hand held as I did this one. I also used my 28-70mm Nikon lens because it is the only one I have for the D-800.Inspiration
I was kind of upset because I could not get to Cape May or Wildwood NJ to see the monarchs flying down the streets during the last week in September but as it turned out some of the butterflies made it to Bayonne so I had a great surprise right outside my door.Editing
I do use Photoshop and MacPhun to process my images to get the color exactly as I remember it. I shoot in raw format so it is always a bit of a creative experiment to get it right. In my camera bag
Well, I have my D-800 with 28-70mm lens and then I have a small Leica d-lux camera with a viewfinder along with my Leica Q for street photography.Feedback
I think going to Pacific Grove, California is always a good idea to shoot some great butterflies but since butterfly migration seems to be changing I'd say you have to watch out for when they might be coming near you.
