Behind The Lens

Location

There was a beautiful sunset on the Wildwood NJ Boardwalk the night before I took this photo. I was staying in a hotel in Cape May and went out early to catch the sunrise the following morning to see if the dramatic cloud formation and colors would be repeated. When I got to the beach it was still dark and a number of other people were watching the dolphins in the water. They did not notice the dramatic sunrise unfolding because their eyes were on the water. A lone bird was soaring above me.

Time

It was July and sunrise was rather early. I believe I got to the beach at about 5:30 a.m. so I could see the drama unfolding.

Lighting

The high temperatures and humidity (it was in the high 90's) seem to help with the colors which I could see in the morning light. I had to make decisions about what ISO to use and took some shots with varying ISO's (1600, 1000,etc.).

Equipment

I used my Nikon D-800 with 24mm-70mm lens to capture the photo.

Inspiration

I particularly enjoy a good sunrise and sunset - the colors are fabulous on the right days and cloud formations vary and give you a good show to capture. The lone bird which I focused on seemed to represent a bit of me standing on the beach virtually alone with my view and perspective of the sunrise.

Editing

I worked on my image in Photoshop with opening it in Camera Raw and then added more drama by going to MacPhun Aurora HDR and making selections to help the image pop.

In my camera bag

I really only have one lens for my Nikon D-800 and it is a 24-70mm lens which is a nice all purpose lens.

Feedback

Getting up early for sunrise is always a challenge but it seems that you get the most colorful images when the weather conditions are extremely hot or cold.
