This photo of the Super Moon was taken at Picacho Peak in southern Arizona on the last night the Super Moon was whole.Time
The photo of the moon was actually taken at sunrise with the moon setting. The mountain peaks have a reddish tint due to the rising sun, and the darkness of the sky behind the moon is the last bit of darkness from the night before.Lighting
As I had gotten all my settings wrong the night before when trying to catch the moon rising over the mountains, I knew I only had one to still capture the moon (this was the last night of the Super Moon). So I decided to get up early and try to capture the moon setting. We have a small distinct mountain near our house called Picacho Peak. I thought it would be great to get the Super Moon setting with the peak in the same frame.Equipment
I used a Nikon D810 with a Nikon - AF-S DX NIKKOR 55-300mm f/4.5-5.6G ED VR lensInspiration
The Super Moon is a rare event so I figured I would try to capture it rising over the mountains surrounding our house. Of course I waited to the last night and, ended up blowing all the settings on my camera. All I got was a huge white blob and the silhouette of the mountains. So with a little encouragement/harassing by my wife, I got all the settings straightened out and got up early to catch the moon setting. Fortunately we have Picacho Peak ear our house which seemed to be an ideal setting if I could position myself at the right time. Thank goodness things came together and I was able to take this photo.Editing
Yes I did some post-processing. I ran the photo RAW image through Lightroom and dehazed the image in order to get the colors to look like what I saw.In my camera bag
In my bag, I carry two camera bodies, the Nikon D810 and the D7100. I prefer the D810 body, but keep the other body to help in transitioning from wildlife/nature to landscape photography when I'm out hiking. I carry three lenses in my bag: the AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G VR, the AF-S DX NIKKOR 55-300mm f/4.5-5.6G ED VR and the AF-S NIKKOR 200-500mm f/5.6E ED VR. My preferred lens is the 200-500mm as I enjoy wildlife photography and it gives me the range to get better shots. With this lens, I do use a Nikon - AF-S Teleconverter TC-14E II 1.4x which maintains all the auto function capabilities of the D810 and D7100 bodies. The last thing I carry is a mono pod, but I do have a tripod I take when I'm doing specific landscape photography.Feedback
Keep shooting and learning. I delete probably a 1000 images before I get one I want to keep. I'm still learning, but love getting out and shooting. Even my worst days are real good just because I get to see things we normally don't see.
