Brownsea Island is one of the few places in Britain where native red squirrels can flourish because they are isolated, and thus protected, from the North American grey squirrel, which has displaced them in other parts of the country. I've wanted to visit the island for some time to photograph this elusive species. Autumn is the best time to do so, as the squirrels descend from the tree canopy to feed on pine seeds on the forest floor.
