My friend, the late Chris Vels and I were road trip traveling buddies and had made several railfan trips to Colorado and one non-railfan trip to Death Valley shooting Kodachrome. In 1974 we made another trip to Death Valley. I had been using a view camera for about a year at this time and this was the first time for shooting on the dunes. I hiked out before dawn with six film holders. I had already used five of them when I came on this scene.
I shot Sand Dune #1 (entered previously in another contest) with my Ilex 254 mm Acuton. After that I switched to my 150 mm Acutar, rotated the camera back and turned the camera slightly to the right for another shot. I had used up all my film, but with these two shots I knew I had something. As I walked back to the car, I had a feeling of both triumph and elation that I have rarely had in photography. These two images were the only worthwhile ones from this shoot so I named them Sand Dune #1 and Sand Dune #2.
