As with all my wildlife photographs, I try to capture the emotion and character of whatever I'm shooting. The Atlantic Puffin has that in spades. I had a blast on Machias Seal Island, in Maine. Can't wait to get back!

Location
Machias Seal IslandTime
Fairly early in the morning. Most likely before 9 am.Lighting
The island is pretty wide open as far as lighting goes, so for best like you'd need to either be there early in the morning (which you always are because only one tour company goes there) or it needs to be overcast. Otherwise the light can get pretty harsh.Equipment
Canon 7D Mark ii and Sigma 70-200mm OS lens. There is no room for a tripod in the photo blinds that you would be stationed in.Inspiration
I've always wanted to see Atlantic Puffins, and this tour provided ridiculously close looks at them, without disturbing them in their nesting habitat!Editing
Yes, but not much. When you can shoot these beautiful birds so closely, only minor adjustments to contrast, clarity, and exposure were needed. In my camera bag
I carry two bodies, a Canon 6D and Canon 7D Mark ii. Lenses regularly include Tamron 150-600mm VC, Tamron 24-70mm VC, Canon 50mm f/1.4, and Sigma 70-200 f/2.8. Also always have my Lee Big Stopper kit!Feedback
Travel, travel, travel. The best way to see these amazing birds in the US is to contact Bold Coast Tours and have Captain Andy take you out to Machias Seal. It's an amazing island with wonderful diversity, and well worth the cost to get there! Once there, just about any combination of DSLR and lens will net you some very memorable shots of the Atlantic Puffin, as well as Arctic Terns, Common Murres, Razorbills, and perhaps a couple other wonderful species!
