Location
This photograph was taken in Rundu, northern Namibia. It was on a road running parallel to the Okavango River.Time
It was just before sunset, around 18:30. The main road that connects all the towns along river is a dusty one which makes it perfect for sunset photos with all the dust hanging in the air. The daytime temperatures in northern Namibia is normally above 40 Degrees Celsius so the is very little human activity throughout the day, but as it starts to cool down people start appearing from everywhere.Lighting
It was still relatively bright sunlight when i took the photograph, a big bonus for my shutter speed, considering the fact that I was shooting at 400mm and going for a silhouette. The dust hanging in the air simulated a softbox effect on the entire scene, casting a soft light on an extremely harsh enviromentEquipment
This was shot on a Canon 6D + Canon 70-200mm Mk2 IS F2.8 + Canon 2X Extender Mk3Inspiration
We were driving along the road to photograph static portraits when drove past these two boys. I looked back in the rearview mirror and just saw the shot, so i quickly stopped and rushed to get into position.Editing
In post I did the usual cleaning up, adjusted my brightness and contrast and added a gradient to the sky. After that I applied some sharpeningIn my camera bag
I like to carry a wide selection of lenses wherever I go, the bag is normally packed with a Canon 24-70mm F2.8, Canon 70-200mm Mk2 IS F2.8, Canon 17-40 F4.0, Canon 50mm F1.8 & Canon 85mm F1.2. The bodies are Canon 5D Mk3, Canon 6D & Canon 5D Mk2. The Manfrotto tripod and gorillapod is also nearby at all times. I also shoot alot of portraits, so for lighting I use the Profoto B1 Kit.Feedback
To capture something similar without getting lucky I would say it will be a waiting game. Finding the right location is key! This shot needs a windless sunset, as you want the dust in the air to hang there as long as possible. Always be alert when traveling away from home, you never know when you might find the perfect spot for a photograph. Sometimes you also need to envision what a scene might look like at sunrise or sunset. The best advice I can give on this photograph is to be as best prepared as you can be at all times, have your camera ready and your eyes and mind open. And most important of all is to have fun while you doing it.
