A fantastic capture of this lighthouse. A very different take on the usual shots from here. Brilliant sky too. Great work.

Amazing shot! Great control of exposure to capture both the light of the tower and the milky way :)

Hi Cassie, its all to do with your settings - aperture as wide as you can go with the lens you have, long exposure (not more than 20 seconds though), ISO as high as you can go without getting to noisy (6400 for my camera) and then post-processing! Happy shooting.

Location
This photograph was taken at Cape Palliser on the Wairarapa coastline about one and a half hours drive from Wellington New Zealand.Time
This was captured at around 11:00pm on a beautiful clear. It is a series of images merged together as a panorama in photoshop.Lighting
Being quite some distance from any of the major towns or cities there is virtually no light pollution - perfect for nighttime photography. There was also no moonlight at the time this was captured.Equipment
I used my Canon 6d, 24-105L lens set at 24mm and f/4. A tripod and remote shutter were both used to reduce any camera shake.Inspiration
I'm not a "hardcore" astrophotographer but I do like to occasionally shoot nights. A lot of the images I do see are wide sweeping panoramas that have a heap of landscape, a big arching milky way but you can't really see much else - essentially to me they all feel a bit the same. I wanted a dominant landscape or manmade structure (the lighthouse was perfect) that did feature the Milky Way captured with a different perspective to what is usually seen.Editing
The image was stitched together in photoshop. The Milky Way was enhanced using some curve layers and a bit of colour correction. In my camera bag
Pretty much what is listed above - the one camera body, the one all purpose lens, tripod remote shutter and a couple of filters ( a polariser and ND600).Feedback
A lot of people go on about planning your trip and being patient and taking your time - awesome advice if you do have the time to do that! I'm a big spur of the moment fan - if I like the look of something I shoot it! I do think obviously about my settings and develop a mental picture of how I want the image to turn out but I am a lot more of a "hey that looks cool" kind of shooter.
