Behind The Lens

Location

Believe it or not, this image was actually taken at a LOWES Home Improvement Store. The majority of my work is captured in the most random of places - from grocery stores, to flower farms and nurseries, and even the front yards of complete strangers homes. I keep my camera at the ready because I never know when I may find that perfect shot! It is not uncommon to see me driving and immediately flip my car around to just pull over and capture a beautiful bloom!

Time

Finding the perfect light has always been a matter of chance or luck, but I still find my best shots are taken within the golden hour. This is a period of time right after sunrise or right before sunset. With all the technology today, photographers are even finding apps to map out exactly when and where the best light will be to catch those award winning shots. I don't rely on any one app, but I do seem to capture my best shots early in the morning or right at sunset. With this specific image an summer afternoon storm was rolling in and the sun was already down.

Lighting

With this image, a storm was quickly approaching, so the clouds were dark and the lighting was very dramatic. I just happened to be in the right location and the right time. There may have been some reflected light coming from the background adding more soft green color to the image.

Equipment

Nikon D7200 - 50mm, no tripod, internal flash - nothing fancy. But, my next investment is a PLAMP, - a plant clamp - two clips at either end of an articulating arm to support Macro images - for just $30!

Inspiration

Beautiful Blooms are my specialty and encourage my creative, artistic side of photography. I love looking at the world in different view- grabbing close-up images of beauty, color, and detail. Each flower is so unique and no two are the exact same. I am not afraid to bend down, lay in the dirt, or stand on my tip toes to observe from a different viewpoint to see things that the average eye doesn't see.

Editing

Lightroom is my best friend for all post-processing! Yet, I do use Photoshop for more complicated, creative compositing. When you shoot Macro Flower Photography, it makes sense to crop the image, use fill light, and fade when necessary.

In my camera bag

Anything Nikon - lol. Right now I shoot with a Nikon D7200 body, a 50, 35, or 85 mm lens, a Nikon Speedlight, diffusers and reflectors too. Don't ever forget your SD Cards! My latest purchase was my bag- made by TENBA - absolutely loving it so far!

Feedback

Experiment with different camera angles to find what works best, and make the flower the focus of every shot. Shoot as close as possible using a macro lens. Tripods don't always work, but make sure to keep a steady hand.
