Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at a charity event which takes place at a country house in Yorkshire, England. There is a classic car and supercar rally amongst lots of other stuff going on, and I caught this shot as all the cars were leaving at the end of the day. The Aventador happens to belong to the owner of the house, so I was hoping for composition that would place them both together.

Time

The area was crowded with people looking at the show cars for most of the day, so I returned just at closing time with the hope of getting a shot without people in, and with the car passing just in front of the house on its route back to the main driveway - the wait paid off!

Lighting

I wanted this image to look purposefully dark. The Aventador is a formidable looking machine in the flesh, and in black, with black wheels, it really does look like a modern day batmobile! I shot late in the day, underexposed slightly to keep detail in the sky and the house windows, and then chose not to bring a lot of light back in post processing to keep that dark look - perhaps reminiscent of Gotham Town...

Equipment

I used a Canon EOS 6D, with the Canon EF 24-70 f/4 L lens at 32mm. I didn't have time to use a tripod, so I handheld the camera increased the shutter speed to compensate.

Inspiration

I've always loved machines of any kind, but cars in particular - I think the sense of childlike wonder never really left. For me, there's something a little special about cars - the time and effort that goes into the design, the balance between masculine and feminine hints in how certain features like lights are shaped, and the attention that designers place on small details. Something like this Lamborghini embodies all of that - as you move around it new shapes and shadows appear as a result of the combination of angles and corners carefully placed together by the designer on a page or a screen before a physical object came to life.

Editing

I use Lightroom and sometimes Photoshop for post processing my images, but I don't have a standard set of adjustments - I'll decide what to apply to each individual image depending on what I feel it needs. I'm definitely of the opinion that less is more when it comes to post-processing. This image had some adjustments for highlights and shadows in Lightroom and a little sharpening on the house and car using a high-pass filter. I shot the original in RAW, but always had the idea of this being a black and white shot, so converted to monochrome in Lightroom and adjusted contrast before exporting.

In my camera bag

The Canon EOS 6D is my go-to camera, and along with it I usually carry 16-35mm, 24-70mm and 70-200 lenses. For event shooting, I tend not to carry a tripod, but for travel and landscapes I also carry a Sirui T-2204XL tripod.

Feedback

For the opportunity to capture great shots of cars and other machines, check out any country fairs or charity events in your area. Often any event with a classic or modern car show will be a prime opportunity for some creative shooting, but the challenge is often in isolating your subject when event visitors and other cars can fall into frame. A couple of tricks I use to help isolate particular vehicles are to wait until the entrants are leaving at the end of the day, or if there is a 'show ring' in which they will drive around individually then stalk your subject there instead. If your subject isn't moving then the second option is to use a wide-angle lens and get really close - in this case you can fill the frame with your subject, and use the characteristics of your lens to stretch the surrounding area and make it look isolated when in fact there are other objects or people just outside the frame.
