A trip through the region of La Geria on Lanzarote captures the true essence of the island. With volcanoes in the distance, the winding roads take you through masses of vineyards sculpted into the hillsides and valleys. In defiance of the harsh volcanic environment, islanders have found the means to grow vines using ‘picon’ (fine volcanic gravel) to retain moisture from the overnight dew to compensate for the lack of rainfall, and shelters made of rocks to protect young vines from the wind. The patterns etched into the landscape with such an epic backdrop is an amazing formula for landscape photography. Shot as part of my work on Photographing Lanzarote, a digital location guide to the most stunning sights on the island. See photographinglanzarote.com for more info.
