Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken in my hometown in Derry N.Ireland underneath the stunning Foyle bridge on the banks of the River Foyle.

Time

I arrived at this location roughly around 4pm. It was quite clouds and the river was moving fast. As it was a pretty overcast day and the clouds and water were moving fast I wanted to use an ND filter and a long exposure to blur the clouds and the water which were moving in opposite directions. I had realised that I left my filters in my studio so I shot this image handheld. Actually a number of images later stitched together in post production. The blur to the water and the sky also created in post production.

Lighting

It was very overcast and quite dull that day. Looking at the RAW files in post colour just wasn't working for me. Also the water looked very rough. I made the decision to convert to black and white and blur the water and the clouds in post.

Inspiration

I was out to create a unique view from underneath the bridge. This bridge has been photographed hundreds of times but I had yet to see a good image from this perspective. I shot a number of images hand held to create this piece. I carefully stood in the one spot and took roughly 6 images making sure to capture the bridge going over my head. I then stitched the images together using Adobe light room.

Editing

As mentioned it was very overcast and the images looked dull and boring. The image had loads of details and contrasts so I decided to convert to black and white. I now had a lovely image but I decided to blur the water and the clouds in photoshop.

In my camera bag

My main go to camera is my Nikon D750 and 16-35 f4 lens. I also have a Nikon d610 which I use as a backup. I also own a sony a77 which I am starting to use less now. I always carry my Tokina 100mm 2.8 macro lens, 50mm 1.4 Nikon. Essentials: batteries, more batteries, and memory cards.

Feedback

Try and be unique. Often landmarks are photographed from the same location hundreds and hundreds of times. This gets boring... You want people to look at your picture and think Where is this? Think about what you want to achieve before heading off to shoot .
