Behind The Lens

Location

This pic was taken on a dock of a Salvage Store in Aurora Oregon. They sell items from old homes or architecture. These crates were just sitting on their dock and I just loved the repeated Burned name of "Nelson's Berries Wilford Nelson, Hubbard, OR" This company is still in business selling one of the best products to come out of Oregon, the world famous Berries, the size of an egg.

Time

This was taken in early afternoon, grey skies but it worked for the grey wood.

Lighting

I liked how the crates that are facing you have light on them, but the two stacks pointing in are both in shadow. It really helps the branded crates to satnd out.

Equipment

This was actually taken with an Iphone 6 Plus.

Inspiration

I am always looking for the unusual. I like to be surprised by the every-day items that are simple but interesting. This stack of Berry Crates were not there a week before I shot this, so I was taken by their pattern when I first saw them. The old worn wood and the burned brand of the company name on the crates just kept catching my attention. I always take several angles and distances from almost every image and filling the frame on this one seemed to be the best.

Editing

In my camera bag

I shoot with a Nikon D7000. I have a Sigma 50mm, a 35mm, 80-200, 200-600mm zoom. I use a Unipod most of the time unless Im shoot a sunrise or sunset in landscapes, then I use a tri-pod and a remote plunger so Im never touching the camera.

Feedback

Salvage yards have some of the most interesting items all in one place. If your looking to capture unique images try to find a salvage yard with architecture items with old signs and old iron items like stars that offer images you might never try to capture. There are times I spend an hour or more just shooting simple items that you only find in a salvage store. I've seen old Merry-Go-Round horses, or old painted steel signs. I see something new every time I go.
