Location
I live in Calgary, Alberta, near the Bow River that flows through the city. I was driving on a lane to a parking area when I saw this winter coyote coming out of a coulee to the top of the hill. I stopped, rolled down the window, and started shooting.Time
This was taken on the 14th of December, 2011, at 10:52 AM.Lighting
It was a cloudy day with flat light. This was a good circumstance, as there were no harsh shadows.Equipment
Nikon D7000, Nikkor 80mm-400mm lens, shot at 1/640 second, f5.6, ISO 400, and 370mm focal length, handheld.Inspiration
My passion is for wildlife photography, and I am always watching for the animals and birds in our area. The coyotes with their beautiful winter coats are particularly handsome at this time of year, and I was lucky enough to be in the right place at the right time.Editing
I've learned since beginning with digital cameras starting back in 2003, that it is always best to underexpose as opposed to overexpose. This leads to some post-processing. This photo was lightened slightly and sharpened to highlight the eyes, and the winter coat.In my camera bag
I shoot a Nikon D7200 with a D7000 back-up body. My lenses are a Nikkor 18mm-105, a Nikkor 80mm-400mm zoom, and a Tamron 150mm-600mm. My flash is a Metz 50 AF-1.Feedback
With any wildlife photography, the most important thing to remember to expect the unexpected and BE READY at all times. Your subjects are operating in their environment on their schedule, not yours! Learn the capabilities of your camera with the available light you have, and shoot with as fast a shutter speed as possible. Be prepared to shoot in bursts if the animal or bird is in motion, trying to keep the subject centered as best you can. As stated above, my passion is the outdoors and creatures that live in it. Whatever your passion is in this fantastic world of photography, have fun with our endless search to shoot the "perfect shot"! Good luck and good shooting to all!
