These are the front doors to the historic Huntsville First United Methodist Church at 120 Greene Street, Huntsville, AL (35801).Time
I don't recall the exact time, it was a very cloudy day and I think it was around 11:00 a.m. I was playing hooky from my own church, which was just around the block lol.Lighting
It was very cloudy, and I love shooting white and bright colors on cloudy days. It was still very bright, so i had a super fast shutter speed of 1/6400th of a second, with a nominal 200 ISO, which allowed me to use an aperture of f/1.4 (I wanted that look that only f/1.4 can get).Equipment
I used a Canon EOS 5D Mark III camera and a Canon EF50mm f/1.4 USM. I have a good Manfrotto tripod that I carry with me but this was actually a handheld shot. I feel pretty comfortable shooting handheld at 1/6400th a second.Inspiration
This was a photo I had mad a couple of attempts at. I love shooting colorful doors. And the stained glass os such a beautiful flavoring of the doors. It begged to be photographed.Editing
I rent Photoshop (Ps) from Adobe (the best way to get it), and I always shoot in RAW format and I start out in the Adobe/Ps RAW editor. I can't recall exactly what I did here so I will mostly give a general overview of what I typically do to a photo. I don't typically do much. I crop and level. I do some aberration and lens corrections. Some color and contrast enhancement. The biggest adjustments are dehazing, sharpening, and luminance/noise reduction, which work best in the first round of editing (trying to sharpen or adjust luminance in the raw editor AFTER you have already imported the image in Ps is less effective for whatever reason). Once the image is imported to Ps, I might do a high pass sharpening and some dodging/burning. With this photo I did do an HDR conversion because I felt the colors and contrasts would work well in an HDR format. In my camera bag
Depends on what I am setting out to shoot. But I usually always carry my Canon 5D Mark III around my neck and will keep a Canon Rebel T6i in my bag. I almost always have my Canon EF24-105mm f/4L IS USM, and ALWAYS my Canon EF50mm f/1.4 USM, and either my Canon EF100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS USM or a Canon EF70-200mm f/2.8L USM. If I am going to take pictures of flowers or insects I bring a EF100mm f/2.8L Macro IS USM. I occasionally shoot with a Canon EF35mm f/2 IS USM. On rare occasions I will bring a Canon EF20-35mm f/3.5-4.5 USM if I need to go beyond 24mm.Feedback
Just look for the color and the beauty in what may seem to be an unremarkable thing. It's just a door. It's just a stain glass window. BUT it's beautiful. And that called out to me to be captured. Beauty is all around us, it just needs to be put in the right light, the right angle, and the right color. I certainly don't have any magic information, but those are some of my thoughts.
