The photo was taken in my backyard, it was a spur of the moment pose he did, and I had to capture it.Time
I was not expecting to take this shot! Fynn is his name, but we sometime call him Doofus because of the way he can act. Late afternoon, we had him outside on the deck with his friend Riley. Suddenly he stopped and started staring into space, (probably saw a squirrel or something!) I repositioned myself and took the shot, checked my LCD screen and said to myself, I have to post this picture!Lighting
The lightning was noting special, no flash, no harsh sunlight, Just an afternoon with clouds and minimal lightEquipment
They say any camera can produce amazing images, and this photo defiantly shows that! This was taken back when I had my Nikon D5500 (which I no longer own) and have since moved on to bigger and better cameras. All handheld with the basic 55-300 DX nikkor lens.Inspiration
Just seeing a dog nicknamed doofus, staring into space like he usually does, is what inspired this photo. He can sometimes stop in the house and just stare at nothing, or lay on top of the couch and stare out the window for hours. He is a sweet dog and very lovable. To capture him in such a majestic way is very rare.Editing
Very minimal exposure and contrast in lightroom CC. It does look like the background is black and white, but that is just how the picture came out, and it made it that much more interesting to me.In my camera bag
Well back when this was taken I used the D5500 with a 55-300 lens. Currently I travel with either a Nikon D810 with a 24-70 2.8 and a Tamron 35 1.8. I use that for portraits, but Action is what i love to capture. After going to a High School football game, I realized i loved the sports more than the portraits. So for that, I use a Nikon D5 and 300 2.8 with a MeFoto monopod. A MeFoto backpacker also stays in the trunk of my car, because you never know when you might need a tripod.Feedback
My advice is for anyone in general, if you enjoy taking pictures, wether a pro or an amateur. Than get out and take pictures. The only way anyone is going to get better is by trying and practicing. I know this picture is more of a snapshot and spur of the moment shot, but sometimes those turn out to be the best, and most interesting. I went to my first High School football game last year... Not knowing anything about what settings to use, I spent the entire game changing things around on the camera until I got it right. When it was time for the 2nd game, my F-stop, ISO and shutter speed where set and ready to go. I only had to change it once, to compensate for the sun going down. For anyone reading this, just get out there and shoot, go explore, and take your camera with you. You never know what you might come across.
