This photo was taken in my living room, just before Christmas. My cat, Nala, decided to explore my fake Christmas tree. This is some thing she has never done before, and being 11 years old, I would never have thought she had it in her to be so spritely! It was a total surprise when I came it the room and found her kitty eyes peeking out at me from the lights and decorations!Time
It was early evening, around 5:30 pm when I took this photo of my usually laid back kitty cat. I couldn't find her at first, but then saw the movement in the Christmas tree, and there she was!Lighting
When I took this photo, the living room light was on and the Christmas tree lights were on. I just used what light was surrounding the tree and my cat. I didn't use a flash or any studio lighting that I have. It was just a spontaneous moment and quick snap!Equipment
I used my Nikon 1 Aw1 camera with Nikon lens, 11 to 27.5. I was handheld with the camera. There was no tripod used, or flash. I just used existing light.Inspiration
This was a spur of the moment shot; something I wasn't expecting. But my philosophy about photography is that when you see something worth taking, don't hesitate and just shoot! I always have a camera on hand for moments like this! She just looked so relaxed sitting among the Christmas tree branches with the light and decorations around her. I couldn't pass on a cut shot of my cat, Nala.Editing
This photo didn't take much post-processing. I did do some brighten up and tweaked the contrast in Photoshop with the raw image. In my camera bag
I have the Nikon D7200 that I have been using lately. I have a variety of lends that I carry with me. I usually get away with using the Nikon lens, 18 to 140. But I have a macro lens that I carry around for the close insect and nature shots, the Tamron 90mm F/2.8 and Sigma Sports Telephoto lens which is 150 to 600mm F5 to 6.3. I also just invest in a Nikon Fisheye lens! I do also carry around a Nissin Di600 Flash. For my All weather, underwater shots, I use my Nikon 1AW1 camera. It's compact and useful for quick shots and when you need a camera in a pinch. I have a couple of lens for this camera, too. I have two underwater lens, the Nikon 11 to 27.5 and the Nikkor Aw 20m/6.5.6ft. I also have a 1 Nikkor 13 to 6.7 and 1Nikkor 30 to 110 lens.Feedback
Since this was a spontaneous moment, I would have to say that you just have to have a camera on hand and don't waste any time! You never know when a moment like a cat in a Christmas tree will happen! If a moment like this does occur, don't touch anything, don't try to change the scene. Just let the animal (in this case, the cat) be itself. You will get better results. About lighting, if it's darkened in the room, do turn on an over head light. But other than that, leave the situation as it is and see what happens!
