What exposure settings for the background? I think this works much better without the bird :)

Location
This photo was take at Clover Beach in Linden, Mi.Time
I took this photo right as golden hour was coming to an end, I was all packed up and heading back to my car when I turned around and took one more look at the sun setting behind me. Right then I saw the swan swim out and the sky began glowing. I ran back down to the beach and continued shooting.Lighting
Not really, I am excited I looked back though. Right when I thought I was done for the day this shot crept up on me.Equipment
Nikon D600, 24-120mm Nikkor Lens & a 3 stop + 2.5 stop soft Grad. ND filter by Vu Filters. MeFoto Roadtrip TripodInspiration
I was just out shooting some long exposures of the sun setting, trying out these her Vu Filters - I'd say I got lucky with the swan swimming into the scene!Editing
I did, this was a couple of photos - Then swan swimming across the lake is what caught my eye so I shot that with a fast enough shutter speed to freeze his motion & create the silhouette. After he was gone I took another shot - this time a longer exposure to create an image that was a little more "Dreamy" I panned slightly during the 60 second exposure to smooth out the trees on the horizon line making for a less "static" image. Later in Photoshop I mixed the two exposures together to create what I had originally seen when I turned around to take one last look.In my camera bag
Right now I keep a Nikon D800 with the Sigma 24-70mm 2.8, Sigma 70-200mm 2.8, Nikkor 16mm 2.8, MeFoto Tripod for when I'm traveling around and a ton of Vu Filters - 10 Stop, 3 Stop, 3 Stop Soft Grad. ND, 3 Stop Hard Grad. ND, 2.5 Stop soft Grad ND, 1 Stop Soft Grad. ND, and their 82mm Circular Polarizer. They make some great stuff!Feedback
A tripod definitely helps, find somewhere you see your shot and let everything else come to you. While you're panning don't be jerky, just smoothly let the camera coast as if you're just meaning to leave a minor smudge in the final product rather than a choppy slice. You'll know what I'm talking about once you try it out for yourself. =]
