Behind The Lens

Location

This is one of those great examples of timing is everything. Most of my shots come from a nice peaceful, patient place where I take my time, set up, and wait for the moment to come. This one though, came from flying down the highway from Colorado to Arizona, hanging my head out a window, and cranking my iso to 2000 in the middle of the day! Something I would normally never condone. But here we are.

Time

This was taken about 1:00pm on a hot desert day in August. Again, not something I ever do, shooting in the middle of the day.

Lighting

This one took me quite a while in post production. There was this great cloud coming from a forming storm, and I really wanted to make it a feature in the photo. I always find that the clouds that I can get in a landscape are more of a leading character than a set piece. I also needed to make sure the light hitting the rocks was as accurate enough a representation as it could be. Sometimes light can look magnificent at the time, and appear very dull upon second glance.

Equipment

At the time I was using a Canon 5D mark2. I did not use a tripod, and I never use flash. I was also using my favourite go to lens, 21mm Zeiss 2.8. The best wide angle on the market!

Inspiration

The only thing that inspires me when I take a landscape shot is the subject I come across. This happened to be something out of the blue, looked fantastic, and I got the shot.

Editing

I like to use a number of lighting masks, as well I had to clone out some fencing that was along the road. Other than that I play around with contrasting, and colour vibrancy.

In my camera bag

Currently I use a Sony A72. As well as number of lenses ranging from telephoto to wide angle. I don't use filters very often, but I like to carry an ND just for video. And my tripod is a 3 legged thing. They are the best!!!

Feedback

If I ever had any advice for another photographer, it's get out there and do it. Make it a priority. Sometimes in life we get busy and never have enough time for the things we are passionate about. But you miss 100% of the shots you don't take. A little cliche, but it works.
