Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken from Coit Tower in San Fransisco. You have to walk up a "billion" steps to get up there, but it's worth the view.

Time

i took this photo at the perfect time. At night, San Fransisco is covered in this beautifully ominous fog, and I captured the fleeting blue in the sky, as well as fog quickly consuming the Golden Gate Bridge.

Lighting

I used the longest exposure setting my camera has, so really I just stood behind the camera for 30 seconds wondering if I got a good shot, or if it was an overexposed mess. Thankfully it was the beautiful image that I shared here.

Equipment

This was the first time I used my Canon EOS T5 on an actual photoshoot, so I was still an amateur and playing around. I used a Dynex 58" Tripod standing on the ledge, as well as a EF 75-300mm F/4-5.6 III Autofocus Telephoto Zoom Lens.

Inspiration

San Fransisco is one of my favorite places on earth, and I think this photo captured its essence perfectly. Not only does it show the busy, bright, bustling city below, but also the serene fog and sky, creating a beautiful contrast.

Editing

I took multiple of these shots in different exposures, and put them together to create an HDR. Otherwise, the photo is basically raw.

In my camera bag

I have 4 lenses in my bag: One 18-55 IS II Kit lens, One EF 75-300mm f/4-5.6 III, One Opteka Fisheye lens, and a Canon 50mm lens. I also carry around lots of lens wipes (Very Important) and filters for different shooting circumstances

Feedback

Have patience. This photo took roughly ten minutes to get right, and so often it's easy to get discouraged during a photo shoot. The beautiful irony about photography is that you can take as many shots as you want, but on a normal shoot, you only get a dozen if you're lucky. My main advice is to keep shooting. Shoot every day, even if you don't want to, and you will improve and eventually create something amazing.
