Behind The Lens

Location

From my dining room window

Time

6:48 am

Lighting

I live in Central New York not to far from Lake Ontario. The lake help to produce lake effect snow on a regular basis and it is not uncommon to go days without seeing the sun in the winter. The sky was blanketed with thick stratocumulus snow clouds which produces a very flat even light. So the lighting was flat early morning light.

Equipment

Shot with a Nikon D810, AF-S Nikon 70-200mm 2.8 G II Lens, Gitzo tripod (1/400 sec f 2.8 ISO 64 at 200mm)

Inspiration

I have two bird feeders that I keep full all winter. I have a larger number of birds that use them but also about a dozen squirrels that eat what falls to the ground. We had received an overnight gift of about 8-10 inches of snow and the squirrels were burrowing into the snow to find seeds that were on the ground under the snow. The squirrels would be be completely buried under the snow while they searched for the seeds and they would pop up when they found a seed to eat. Most of the time the squirrels are free of snow and it is unusual to see them covered in snow. They shake off the snow landing on them frequently. So I wanted to capture them just as they popped up out of the snow. I grabbed my camera and tripod and set it up and took several shots from where I was as I did not know how long this would last as they were tramping down the snow wherever they had been foraging so the opportunity was going to be short lived.

Editing

Processed in Lightroom small White Balance to overcome the overcast and morning light and cropped

In my camera bag

I like Nikon cameras and lens, I have used Nikon products since the middle 1970's. I have too much equipment to carry so I have a huge Pelican case with most of my lens and cameras. I will pack one of my smaller bags dependent on what I plan to shoot and how far I have to walk. main camera Nikon D810, lens that get the most use are 24-70 2.8, 70-200 2.8, 105 2.8 macro, 14-24 2.8. I use my 24 mm tilt shift quite a bit as well.

Feedback

This was a situation where it is better to be lucky than good. Having the camera nearby was a huge plus. I was in the right place at the right time but his time I had my camera and gear next to me. Practice taking animal pictures before provides you with the knowledge of how to capture the shot.
